Driver dies in crash in Hampton after fleeing state trooper in high-speed chase

Robert Lee Ham II, 23, continued to speed down the interstate going more than 100 mph. He tried to exit but his car flipped over. He died instantly.

HAMPTON, Va. — A Newport News man is dead after his car crashed during a high-speed chase with a Virginia State Police trooper on Friday night.

The incident started sometime around 10:29 p.m. in Hampton when a state trooper saw a 2017 Honda Civic speeding with no headlights eastbound on Interstate 64.

The trooper turned on his emergency lights and siren but the driver continued to increase his speed and refused to stop.

The driver of the Civic, Robert Lee Ham II, continued to speed down the interstate going more than 100 mph.

Ham tried to exit the Mallory Street ramp when he lost control of the car.

The car flipped over several times, throwing a passenger from the car.  

Ham, 23, of Newport News, died instantly.

The passenger in the Civic, Kalik Kydarial Newsome, of Hampton, was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with injuries considered life-threatening.

Ham's family has been notified. He was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

It's unknown if alcohol was a factor in the incident, spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya said.
