NORFOLK, Va. — A man has died after a shooting early Saturday morning. In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), police said they found a man shot around 1:20 a.m. on Core Avenue. That's in the Ghent Area, about a block from Colley Avenue.
Police said the victim was pronounced dead on the scene. Investigators have identified the man as 44-year-old Bradley Kortbawi of Norfolk.
Andrew Chandler said he woke up in the early morning hours of Saturday to see police outside his window investigating.
"When I woke up, I saw out of my bedroom, and I was like, 'What the heck is going on?'" Chandler told 13News Now, "I could see the red and blue lights from the police. It woke me up."
Christian Guy is also a nearby resident. He says he heard around three shots.
"I heard some shots being fired, it sounded like a couple streets over," he said. "Initially, I thought it could have been fireworks or something because of the Fourth of July like a day ago."
Chandler and Guy added that violence is uncommon in the usually quiet neighborhood.
Chandler said, "Obviously you hear stories all about Norfolk, but especially in this neighborhood, we don’t really have that too much."
Guy added, "I moved here from Charlotte, and so this neighborhood was like really nice and really cute. You wouldn’t really expect that coming from this area."
Investigators arrested 56-year-old Vandes Jackson. He is charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm. Jackson is in the Norfolk City Jail without bond. Police have not said what may have led to this shooting.
This death comes on the heels of three other shootings across Hampton Roads this holiday weekend. Two separate shootings in Portsmouth left one man dead and another with critical injuries. Plus, a teen was seriously hurt in a Newport News shooting at a 7-Eleven.
