NORFOLK, Va. — UPDATE: A gale warning was issued for the coasts of Virginia and North Carolina. Follow the latest forecast for Hampton Roads here.
Heavy rain is in the forecast for Hampton Roads from Friday evening into Saturday, which could cause a little bit of trouble on the roads.
According to 13News Now's meteorologists, rain will develop Friday evening expanding from southwest to northeast and becoming heavy at times. A deep flow of Gulf of Mexico moisture will produce ample rainfall totals through the day on Saturday.
There is the potential of one to three inches across a good portion of the area by the time it tapers off Saturday evening.
Although March has been a wet month overall, the last few weeks have been dry therefore the ground will likely be able to absorb most of this heavy rainfall. However, ponding on roadways in vulnerable areas will be possible, especially Friday night into Saturday.
The forecasted weather led to the first two days of Virginia Beach's Cherry Blossom Festival being canceled.
