NORFOLK, Va. — A storm system that will produce rain and stronger winds will move into southeastern Virginia Friday into Saturday.
What the 13News Now weather team is watching: Rain is forecast to develop from south to north Friday evening and overnight becoming heavy at times with embedded thunderstorms, too. Heavy downpours may lead to overwhelming drainage basins and standing water on area roadways overnight into Saturday morning.
Overall rainfall totals are expected to be in the range of one to three inches The dry ground should be effective in absorbing most of this rain so only localized minor flooding is possible.
Winds will also be a factor, increasing in intensity as early as Friday night out of the southeast. Gusts, especially along the coast, will approach 45 miles per hour. Minor coastal flooding can be expected at times of high tide as a result.
We expect the rain to come in two waves. The first, initial batch of heavy rain Friday night through mid-morning Saturday. The second along the storm’s associated cold front Saturday afternoon. The front will likely bring a slightly greater chance of a few thunderstorms, no widespread severe weather is expected at this time.

Behind the cold front, winds will shift to out of the north to northwest and grow in strength. Gusts area-wide will approach 45 miles per hour Saturday afternoon, overnight and on Sunday. Temperatures also crash into the 50s, 40s, and eventually 30s by Sunday morning. Factor in wind gusts over 40 miles per hour and we will be experiencing wind chills in the mid-upper 20s.
The National Weather Service issued a gale warning along the coasts of Virginia and North Carolina, starting Saturday at 7 a.m. and lasting until Monday at 1 a.m.
