1 killed after vehicle struck VDOT truck on I-64 on Newport News-James City County line, VSP says

The crash happened in the eastbound lanes at Exit 247 near the Lee Hall area.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A person was killed after two vehicles crashed on Interstate 64 on the line of James City County and Newport News Wednesday afternoon, Virginia State Police (VSP) said. One of the vehicles belongs to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

The crash happened in the eastbound lanes at Exit 247 on the James City County side shortly after 2 p.m.

Investigators believe the VDOT Safety Service Patrol (SSP) vehicle stopped in the deceleration lane and turned on its lane closure indicators for a disabled vehicle.

Soon after, a 1996 Toyota Camry merged from the eastbound lane into the Exit 247 deceleration lane, according to VSP, who added that the VDOT driver tried to pull away but couldn't, resulting in the crash.

VSP said the crash impact caused the VDOT vehicle to overturn.

Officials identified the Toyota driver as Louis Manning, a 79-year-old man from Midlothian. Medics took him to a hospital, where he later died. The VDOT driver was Jaquay Johnson, a 22-year-old man from Norfolk. He had minor injuries.

According to VSP, both drivers were wearing seatbelts when the crash happened.
