HAMPTON, Va. — People who travel across the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel have mixed feelings about the permanent lane shift onto the new North Trestle headed Eastbound along Interstate 64, the latest development in the HRBT Expansion Project.
However, since traffic lanes shifted on I-64 eastbound at the HRBT, the Virginia Department of Transportation said no crashes have been recorded. Still, some drivers said they feel like they may collide with another driver.
"The first time I went across, I didn't even realize it was a new section of the bridge," said driver Jamie Caldarera.
The merge lane onto the newly constructed Eastbound trestle is subtle, which can surprise drivers like Christopher Cousins, who believes the merge lane should be more comprehensive.
"It's confusing because ... [there] ain't like no yield sign or nothing for when you're getting on and merging in. Somebody will come right up behind you," said Cousins.
VDOT said it has measures to guide drivers through the shifts in traffic. They have posted markers like cones and signs, and they encourage drivers to adhere to posted speed limits, drive without distractions, and stay alert.
These measures are in place to ensure your safety during the lane shift.
