NORFOLK, Va. — The 2024 general election on November 5 will not only pick a president and a vice president. There are many more down-ballot races to keep your eye on, and 13News Now is here to keep you informed before heading to the polls.
The biggest race happening this election is for the Oval Office in Washington, D.C. Every four years, we elect a president and vice president. This year, current Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz are running against former President Donald Trump and Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance. Virginia also has a Senate race to keep an eye on, with incumbent Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine facing Republican challenger Hung Cao. And every member of Congress in the House of Representatives is facing an election.
Below, you'll find all the races and candidates running for office in Virginia as well as rules and deadlines you may want to know. We'll keep updating this page with more stories and related information as we approach Election Day, so bookmark this page and keep coming back for the latest!
Dates, voter deadlines and rules for 2024 Virginia general election:
Early voting already began on Sept. 20, but there are plenty of other opportunities (and ways) to vote in this election.
- First day of early in-person voting at your local registrar's office: Friday, September 20
- Deadline to register to vote or update an existing registration: Tuesday, October 15
- Voters may register after this date through Election Day and vote using a provisional ballot. For more information on same-day registration, please visit the Virginia Department of Elections page here.
- Deadline to apply for a ballot to be mailed to you (also known as an absentee ballot): Friday, October 25
- Your request must be received by your local voter registration office by 5 p.m. that day.
- Voter registration offices open for early voting: Saturday, October 26
- Last day of in-person early voting: Saturday, November 2
- Election Day: Tuesday, November 5
Virginia Voter ID Rules
Virginia law requires all voters to provide either an acceptable form of ID or, if providing an acceptable ID is not possible, to sign an ID Confirmation Statement at the polls. A voter who arrives at their polling place without an acceptable form of identification or who refuses to sign an ID Confirmation Statement will be given the opportunity to vote using a provisional ballot.
Virginia Voter Registration: How to check your status
In order to vote, Virginians need to be registered. In order to be registered, you must first be eligible to register in accordance with state law.
The Virginia Department of Elections has issued the following requirements in order to be eligible to register to vote.
You must:
- Be a permanent resident of Virginia (not just someone who is here for an extended period).
- Be a U.S. citizen.
- Be 18 years old (if someone will be 18 on the day of a general election, they can vote in the primary when they are 17).
- Not be registered and planning to vote in another state.
- Must be mentally competent.
- Convicted felons must have had their voting rights restored.
If you are not registered to vote but would like to register, you can do so here at the Virginia Department of Elections portal. Remember that the deadline to register to vote is Tuesday, Oct. 15. If you register to vote using the online portal after Oct. 15, you will not be able to cast your ballot in the Nov. 5 general election.
If you need to register after Oct. 15, you will need to follow Virginia's same-day registration guidelines.
If you think you are registered to vote but aren't sure, you can check your Virginia voter registration status here, as well as apply to vote absentee by mail and find your polling place on the online Virginia Department of Elections portal.
Where Do I Vote? How to find your polling location in Virginia
Virginia In-Person Voting
Your polling place for in-person voting is based on the address you use to register to vote. Usually, it is listed on a paper voter card mailed to voters after they register. The Virginia Department of Elections website also has a polling location lookup tool so you can find the address for your voting location there.
Virginia Absentee Voting
For absentee voting, you can use the Virginia Department of Elections' citizen portal or reach out to your voter registrar’s office directly to request an absentee ballot. If you don't know the contact information for your voter registrar, you can look it up by locality online.
Virginia Early Voting
Early voting began on Sept. 20 and will continue until the Saturday before Election Day, Nov. 2. Early voting is held at your local registrar's office or a satellite voting location in your county or city, and the dates and times for early voting may vary by locality. You can look up the location, the website and regular business hours of your local registrar's office via a tool on the Dept. of Elections' website. You may also want to check your local voter registrar's website for specific early voting dates and times as there are usually several weekend days on which they open specifically for early voting.
What is on the ballot in Virginia for the November 2024 election?
There are several federal offices up for election during this cycle, as well as a statewide ballot measure and local office elections. To check which district you vote in, you can check your registration status at the Virginia Department of Elections online portal. Once you input your information, you can see the districts you vote in under "Districts."

There is no gubernatorial election in Virginia this cycle, nor are there any elections for the Virginia General Assembly (elections for the General Assembly are held in odd years). However, there is one ballot measure that will be on the ballot statewide.
The measure will appear with the following wording:
Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended so that the tax exemption that is currently available to the surviving spouses of soldiers killed in action is also available to the surviving spouses of soldiers who died in the line of duty?
For more information about the context of the proposed ballot measure, check out our earlier coverage here.
Hampton Roads Municipal Offices
If your city or county is not listed below, you either do not have any local races for the 2024 November election OR you only have candidates running unopposed for local office. For town and city council races, and some school board races, the number in parentheses means how many seats are within the office. Some seats may not be up for reelection this cycle and are already filled.
