NORFOLK, Va. — The 2024 general election takes place on November 5.
At the top of the ballot is the U.S. Presidential Election: current Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz running against former President Donald Trump and Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance.
Virginia also has a U.S. Senate race and 11 elections for seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. There are many more down-ballot races and referendums to know about before you vote, including a state constitutional amendment and local elections for mayor, sheriff, and school board and city council seats.
Below, you'll find all the races and candidates that will appear on ballots for voters across Hampton Roads, as well as rules and deadlines you need to know.
Virginia election dates and deadlines:
Early voting began on Sept. 20, but there are plenty of other opportunities (and ways) to vote in this election.
- First day of early in-person voting at your local registrar's office: Friday, September 20
- Deadline to register to vote or update an existing registration: Tuesday, October 15
- Voters may register after this date through Election Day and vote using a provisional ballot. For more information on same-day registration, please visit the Virginia Department of Elections page here.
- Deadline to apply for a ballot to be mailed to you (also known as an absentee ballot): Friday, October 25
- Your request must be received by your local voter registration office by 5 p.m. that day.
- Voter registration offices open for early voting: Saturday, October 26
- Last day of in-person early voting: Saturday, November 2
- Election Day: Tuesday, November 5
Virginia Voter ID Rules:
Virginia law requires all voters to provide either an acceptable form of ID or, if providing an acceptable ID is not possible, to sign an ID Confirmation Statement at the polls. A voter who arrives at their polling place without an acceptable form of identification or who refuses to sign an ID Confirmation Statement will be given the opportunity to vote using a provisional ballot.
Virginia Voter Registration:
In order to vote, Virginians need to be registered. Here are the Virginia Department of Elections eligibility requirements in order to register to vote:
- Be a permanent resident of Virginia (not just someone who is here for an extended period).
- Be a U.S. citizen.
- Be 18 years old (if someone will be 18 on the day of a general election, they can vote in the primary when they are 17).
- Not be registered and planning to vote in another state.
- Must be mentally competent.
- Convicted felons must have had their voting rights restored.
If you aren't sure your voter registration status, you can check online here.
Before Oct. 15, you can register to vote online at the Virginia Department of Elections portal. However, if you didn't register to vote before October 15, you will need to follow Virginia's same-day registration guidelines and vote using a provisional ballot. That means that you cannot register online; you will have to register in-person on Election Day at the polling place for the precinct in which you reside. For more information on same-day registration, please visit the Virginia Department of Elections page here.
Where Do I Vote?
Virginia In-Person Voting: Your polling place for in-person voting is based on the address you use to register to vote. Usually, it is listed on a paper voter card mailed to voters after they register. The Virginia Department of Elections website also has a polling location lookup tool so you can find the address for your voting location there.
Virginia Absentee Voting: For absentee voting, you can use the Virginia Department of Elections' citizen portal or reach out to your voter registrar’s office directly to request an absentee ballot. If you don't know the contact information for your voter registrar, you can look it up by locality online.
Virginia Early Voting: Early voting began on Sept. 20 and will continue until the Saturday before Election Day, Nov. 2. Early voting is held at your local registrar's office or a satellite voting location in your county or city, and the dates and times for early voting may vary by locality. You can look up the location, the website and regular business hours of your local registrar's office via a tool on the Dept. of Elections' website. You may also want to check your local voter registrar's website for specific early voting dates and times as there are usually several weekend days on which they open specifically for early voting.

Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended so that the tax exemption that is currently available to the surviving spouses of soldiers killed in action is also available to the surviving spouses of soldiers who died in the line of duty?
Hampton Roads Municipal Offices
If your city or county is not listed below, you either do not have any local races for the 2024 November election OR you only have candidates running unopposed for local office. For town and city council races, and some school board races, the number in parentheses means how many seats are within the office. Some seats may not be up for reelection this cycle and are already filled.
