Man gets 9 years in prison for deadly 2019 Portsmouth shooting

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — A man convicted in a 2019 shooting in Portsmouth was sentenced to nine years in prison, the Portsmouth Commonwealth's Attorney's Office announced Friday.

The sentencing for Tyquan Anderson comes after he was found guilty back in November on charges of manslaughter, two counts of unlawful wounding, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

On June 1, 2019, a shooting on Mt. Vernon Avenue in the London Oaks neighborhood left 28-year-old Robert E. Artis, Jr. dead and three others injured. 

Anderson was arrested days after the incident by the U.S. Marshals and the Chesapeake Police Department Criminal Apprehension Unit. He was charged with aggravated malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and first-degree murder.

According to the Portsmouth Commonwealth's Attorney's Office, Anderson's sentence was 10 years in prison with five years suspended and three years of supervised probation upon release for the voluntary manslaughter charge.

He was also sentenced to five years in prison, with three suspended, and three years of supervised probation for both counts of unlawful wounding that will run concurrently. He will also serve two years for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, bringing the total number to nine years behind bars.
