NORFOLK, Va. — An apartment building fire in the Colonial Heights area of Norfolk left five people displaced early Friday morning, officials said.
The fire happened at a ranch-style apartment building at 923 Lena Street, close to Chesapeake Boulevard. It started in an unoccupied unit.
Firefighters with Norfolk Fire-Rescue responded around 4:20 a.m. and found smoke and flames coming from the front door of the building's first unit.
According to Norfolk Fire-Rescue, firefighters were able to keep most of the damage to the initial fire apartment, but other units saw smoke and water damage.
The fire was under control shortly after 4:45 a.m.
A person from one of the apartments was treated for smoke inhalation. No one else was hurt and the Red Cross is helping those displaced.
Norfolk Fire-Rescue said that crews didn't report any smoke detector activation when they got there.
The fire is being investigated.
