Yorktown man accused of threatening death, 'to burn or bomb' after early morning dispute

Gary Trites faces several charges, including three felony counts of threats of death to an individual and two felony counts of threats to burn or bomb.

YORK COUNTY, Va. — A Yorktown man has been arrested on several charges after an early morning dispute Monday that ended with deputies entering an apartment, the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Gary Joseph Trites, 43, has been charged with three felony counts of threats of death to an individual, two felony counts of threats to burn or bomb, a misdemeanor count of assault and battery, and a misdemeanor count of probation violation for Schedule I or II drugs.

The investigation began shortly after 4:30 a.m. when deputies responded to a call of a possible abduction in the 100 block of Running Cedar Court. That's off Goosley Road and near the Colonial Parkway.

According to the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office, responding deputies could hear a man and woman arguing loudly inside an apartment. A person told deputies they witnessed the woman telling the man to leave.

The sheriff's office said they determined that the man, Trites, was wanted for several charges for an unspecified incident in York County in April.

Deputies knocked on the apartment's door but didn't get a response, then tried to use a phone and loudspeakers to have Trites leave the residence. At 7:50 a.m., deputies entered and took Trites into custody.

He is being held at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.
