YORK COUNTY, Va. — An off-duty sheriff's deputy with the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office is facing assault charges for allegedly fighting with three people late Wednesday night.
Robert Murray has been charged with three misdemeanor counts of simple assault. A spokesperson with the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office tells 13News Now that Murray resigned following the incident.
The situation began around 11:50 p.m. when Murray -- an off-duty, work-as-required sheriff's deputy -- drove to a residence that was shooting fireworks near his home in York County's Tabb area. Then, Murray went to the backyard, where the fight allegedly happened.
The three involved in the fight reached out to the sheriff's office to complain about being assaulted by Murray. The sheriff's office said it interviewed witnesses and the victims on Thursday, an investigation that resulted in Murray's charges.
