HAMPTON, Va. — Police officers on the Peninsula are investigating three separate shootings that happened over the last couple of days.
The violent weekend carried over to Monday morning when someone shot a man inside a convenience store in Hampton.
A spokesman for the Hampton Police Division said someone shot a 37-year-old man inside a Kwik-E-Mart on Floyd Thompson Boulevard around 9:30 a.m. The man is expected to survive.
The spokesman said the man and the suspect went to the convenience store together and started fighting. That’s when police say the suspect pulled out a gun and shot him, before running from the store.
The store owner did not want to talk about the shooting.
Sunday night, Newport News police investigated the city’s 43rd homicide of the year. Investigators said someone shot and killed a man on 28th Street, near Roanoke and Chestnut Avenues.
Just last week, Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew talked with 13News Now about the city’s 41st homicide.
"Nobody wants to see a year like we’ve seen this year, and we’re doing our dead-level best to reduce that and have a better year as we come into the new year," Drew explained.
Chief Drew said that number is likely the highest since the 1970s. But he added the city is down by about 20 shootings compared to last year.
Investigators in Hampton are trying to solve a Saturday night shooting. Police said someone shot into a home on Seldendale Drive multiple times, hitting a woman inside. Police told 13News Now the woman remains in critical condition.
Investigators with Hampton and Newport News Police ask anyone with information on any of these shootings to call the crime line at 1-888-562-5887. Chief Drew will hold a "Chat with the Chief" Tuesday on the department’s Facebook page at noon and again at 6 p.m.
