But how close are we to dealing with record-setting heat?

Check out the numbers for Norfolk: highs Monday and Tuesday will be near 99°. The records are 101° for July 15, and 102° for July 16. The record high for Wednesday could fall but is in less jeopardy. Highs should be 97°, but afternoon showers and storms may cool the highs if they fire up earlier in the afternoon.

Another significant problem for people struggling to deal with the heat is that the morning low temperatures aren't cooling much. The record-high morning low temperatures will likely continue to stand, but it could be close.
