Peninsula residents see first snowflakes of the year

Snow flurries quickly turned into rain near Peninsula Town Center Monday morning.

HAMPTON, Va. — The thought of the Peninsula getting snow had everyone talking.

“I was excited, yeah,” said Williamsburg resident Matthew Meadows.

“No, I don’t like a lot of snow,” said Newport News resident Angela Riley.

Though, some people enjoyed the view. Flurries fell across the Peninsula Monday morning, capturing the eyes of many people.

“I was expecting a little bit," said Hampton resident Kelsey Hall. "I’m not expecting anything to stick but this is a lot more than I thought it would be.”

Snowflakes quickly turned into rain throughout the morning. Unsure of how the winter weather would turn out, some Peninsula residents stocked up on items for their homes.

“Getting my candles, making sure I have enough candles," Riley said. "My groceries, milk products, dairy products, bread.”

Virginia Department of Transportation officials said crews have already pre-treated the roads in parts of the Commonwealth. They are ready to respond to any issues that may pop up on the roads.

Several localities in our area are also watching the roads.

A Gloucester County spokesperson sent this statement:

"At this time, we are working alongside our Emergency Management Department monitoring the forecast and being proactive by putting out messages to the public through our official social media sites to be prepared for the potential of winter weather.

We will continue to monitor the forecast throughout the day and will keep the public updated if conditions change.

Our Facilities Management Department is on standby ready to ensure safe access to County facilities for the public and employees if conditions warrant."

People said they don’t plan on staying outside for long, but they do plan on enjoying the view.

“I think I’m just going to keep looking outside watching the snow fall down,” Hall said.
