Norfolk residents find ways to beat the heat

“The heat indexes today are just off the charts. We got a heat advisory. We did not want to be outside,” said Norfolk resident Brooke Filo.

NORFOLK, Va. — Friday’s hot weather sent people searching for ways to stay cool across Norfolk.

Several people like Brooke Filo and her family went to Mary D. Pretlow Library to beat the heat.

“The heat indexes today are just off the charts. We got a heat advisory. We did not want to be outside,” Filo said.

The library is one of several places the City of Norfolk has designated as a cooling center.

“We thought about the water park, but we’re being a little lazy today. We didn’t want to put on all the sunblock, so it’s a little further out,” said Filo.

As temperatures hit the 90s, others headed to the movie theater for entertainment and to get relief from the sun.

“I’m just here to see the new Deadpool [& Wolverine] movie, trying to get out of this heat and have a nice comfy seat instead,” said Norfolk resident Isaac Sexton.

As the sun began to set, several residents headed to Ocean View Park for FestEvents Backyard BBQ.

“The winds are up to 10 to 15 miles an hour, which normally we don’t like high winds, but these hot days, we love it,” said Festevents CEO Ted Baroody.

As people listened to music and enjoyed the breeze, the owner of J&K Style Grill, Keona Dooley, made sure employees stayed cool on her food truck.

“When I have staff up here and I see that they’re slowing down or they’re getting hot, I normally keep an ice-cold Gatorade, I have ice-cold rags that you put around your neck, and I tell them to go ahead and take a little walk, and I’ll handle it after that,” said Dooley.

As 13News Now meteorologists predict another weather alert for Saturday, Norfolk resident Rick Santigo has some advice on beating the heat.

“Drink a lot of water, and stay out of the sun, that’s all,” said Santigo.
