Heat & Humidity:
Aside from the storms, there is a Heat Advisory from the National Weather Service in effect until 7 p.m. Saturday for most of the region. Areas included are Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Portsmouth, as well as Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Pasquotank, Perquimans and western Currituck counties in North Carolina.
Temperatures will quickly heat up into the lower 90s by late morning and "feels like" temperatures will also quickly rise into the lower 100s. A few locations could even see "feels like" temperatures briefly exceed 105° near the Chesapeake Bay Atlantic coast.
These excessively hot 'feels like' temperatures put more of the population at risk for heat related illnesses. People should take heat precautions, stay hydrated, take frequent breaks and seek air conditioning and shade as much as possible.
The cities of Portsmouth and Hampton opened cooling centers to the public Friday and may keep them open through Saturday. Here's a list of cooling centers across Hampton Roads.
Severe Weather:
We have a severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 9 p.m. tonight for Surry County, James City County, and Gloucester County.
The 13News Now Weather Team will also be monitoring the threat for severe weather. The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted western Southside, the Peninsula, Middle Peninsula, and the Eastern Shore for the Level 2 (out of 5) risk of severe weather Saturday.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to be more numerous than the last few days, with development starting in the afternoon and storms continuing through the evening.
Rapid thunderstorm development is expected by early afternoon, with activity becoming quite widespread by the late afternoon. With high humidity, heavy rainfall and flash flooding could develop in any thunderstorm.
