No traffic deaths but more than 1,000 speeding tickets over Thanksgiving holiday weekend

Statewide, Virginia saw a reduction in fatal accidents for the Thanksgiving reporting window

SUFFOLK, Va. — Data from Virginia State Police showed that while there were seven fatal crashes on Virginia highways over the Thanksgiving holiday break, zero of them were recorded in Hampton Roads.

"In the Hampton Roads area, we had zero fatalities," said Sergeant Michelle Anaya with Virginia State Police. "Which is huge in this area because unfortunately, we do have a large number of fatalities because of how many drivers are in this area."

During one of the busiest travel periods of the year, Virginia saw a reduction in its statewide traffic fatalities across interstates for Thanksgiving; seven were reported statewide this year statewide compared to 11 in 2023 and 19 in 2022.

Still, people will always be willing to push the edge, Sgt. Anaya said. One driver was cited in Virginia Beach for going 133 miles per hour near Witchduck Road on the Sunday after Thanksgiving.
