OCRACOKE, N.C. — After being closed for nearly a week, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) announced NC Highway 12 would reopen Friday afternoon on the north end of Ocracoke Island.
Several days of heavy rain and ocean overwash have kept the road shut down since last weekend.
NC 12 was first closed between the Pony Pens and the ferry terminal on Saturday as heavy rain and wind resulted in ocean overwash across the highway. It also prompted officials to temporarily suspend ferry service which has since resumed.
NCDOT said the highway would reopen at 2 p.m. Friday, but cautioned drivers that "there is still water and sand on the roadway, and a short lane closure around the crews replacing sandbags, so SLOW DOWN!"
The first ferry was also scheduled to leave from Hatteras at 2 p.m., and depart from Ocracoke at 3:30 p.m.
