OCRACOKE, N.C. — Part of North Carolina Highway 12 has shut down on Ocracoke Island as a low-pressure system moving through the region caused ocean overwash on Saturday.
Shortly before 1:30 p.m., the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) said the highway remains closed between the pony pens and the ferry terminal.
NC 12 remains open on both Hatteras and Pea islands, however. Despite remaining passable, officials warn there is sand and water that drivers should remain aware of.
In a post shared on X, NCDOT encouraged drivers taking NC 12 to be cautious throughout the weekend.
"A heads up for weekend travelers on NC12: We've got a coastal low headed our way, with strong winds, heavy rain and possible ocean overwash beginning tonight through Sunday. Travel could get difficult at times, so please be aware and drive with EXTREME CAUTION if venturing out," the post reads.
Further, the weather has forced officials to suspend ferry service between Hatteras and Ocracoke on Saturday. There is no current timeline for when it will be up and running again.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a gale warning along the coasts of Virginia and North Carolina, starting Saturday at 7 a.m. and lasting until Monday at 1 a.m.
