VIRGINIA, USA — Republican incumbent Rob Wittman has won reelection in Virginia's First Congressional District, according to The Associated Press.
He defeats Democratic challenger Leslie Mehta in a race covering the newly re-drawn U.S. House District 1, which now includes Chesterfield and Henrico counties.
As Wednesday afternoon with 79% of precincts reporting, Wittman leads the race with 56% of the vote, compared to 43% for Mehta.
The election in Virginia's First Congressional District was widely seen as a competitive race that could determine party control of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Wittman largely campaigned to protect Virginia's national defense interests. He also expressed support for the military. He has served as Vice Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee since 2007.
