VIRGINIA, USA — Millions of Virginians chose to vote early in the 2024 General Election, including more than 435,000 right here in Hampton Roads.
According to the Virginia Public Access Project, nearly 2.3 million early and mail-in absentee ballots had been cast across the Commonwealth, as of Saturday, which was the end of the state's early voting period. That’s fewer than in 2020, when 2.8 million early votes were cast.

However, elections officials are still receiving absentee ballots, which can be returned to a voter's local general registrar's office by 7 p.m. on Election Day. Absentee voters can also put their ballot in a drop-off location or mail it on or before Election Day; it must be received by the general registrar's office by noon on the third day following the election.
Here's a look at 2024 early and absentee vote totals compared to the number of active registered voters from across the Hampton Roads region, according to local voter registrars and the Virginia Public Access Project.
