NORFOLK, Va. — While many people in Virginia have voted early in person or mailed in their ballots, others are still expected to head to the polls and cast their votes on Election Day, Nov. 5, 2024.

Voters will decide on a number of races in this election, including the presidential race between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, a U.S. Senate race between Tim Kaine and Hung Cao, and district races for the U.S. House of Representatives. Voters will also decide on a proposed Virginia constitutional amendment, and many cities and counties will also have local races. Click here for our 2024 Virginia Voter Guide.

What time does voting start on election day?

Polls across the state of Virginia will open at 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

What time does voting close on election day?

Polls across Virginia will close at 7:00 p.m., but if you're in line to vote by 7 p.m., poll workers must let you vote, not matter how long it takes.

Where to vote?

If you need help finding your polling location, you can access that information through the Virginia Department of Elections website's polling location lookup tool.

Virginia Voter ID Requirements

Virginia law requires all voters to provide either an acceptable form of ID or, if providing an acceptable ID is not possible, to sign an ID Confirmation Statement at the polls.

A voter who arrives at their polling place without an acceptable form of identification or who refuses to sign an ID Confirmation Statement will be given the opportunity to vote using a provisional ballot.

When will election results start coming in?

Expect to see the first unofficial results shortly after polls close at 7 p.m. The results are entered by each of Virginia’s local general registrar offices into the Virginia Department of Elections' results reporting system, which then publishes the updated results online.
