NORFOLK, Va. — Democratic incumbent Senator Tim Kaine will keep his seat in Congress after winning the U.S. Senate race for the state of Virginia, according to ABC News.
As of 8:30 p.m. Tuesday with 46% of precincts reporting, Kaine leads the race with 52% of the vote, compared to 48% for Cao.
The race between Kaine and Cao has been closely watched leading up to Election Day. Both candidates fought hard to win over voters in a series of campaign events, including holding a debate in Norfolk in September.
Kaine told voters he would continue tackling issues he has already made progress toward during his time in office. Some of those key issues include creating jobs to strengthen Virginia's economy, protecting reproductive rights, making health care more affordable, and supporting servicemembers and veterans.

Combating climate change is another key issue that Kaine aims to continue working on, commending federal funding that aims to support infrastructure that will help the Port of Virginia become carbon neutral by 2040.
Kaine has never lost an election in the Commonwealth, running for and winning the position of Lieutenant Governor, Governor, and twice for U.S. Senate. Kaine got two million more votes than Mike Pence in Virginia in 2016 when he ran for Vice President.
