VIRGINIA, USA — Democrat Bobby Scott has won reelection in Virginia's U.S. House District 3, defeating Republican challenger John Sitka, III in a race covering Norfolk, Newport News, Hampton, Portsmouth and parts of Chesapeake.
As of 9:25 p.m. Tuesday with 39% of precincts reporting, Scott leads the race with 69% of the vote, compared to 30% for Sitka.
The election in District 3 was widely seen as a competitive race that could determine party control of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Bobby, who has served in the House since 1993, largely campaigned on education, transportation, economic development, and crime prevention. He also expressed improving health care.
Following the redistricting of Virginia, District 3 covers parts of Arlington County and Alexandria City. The district is comprised of a more than 50% white demographic and about a 13% Black demographic, according to the Virginia Public Access Project.
VPAP reports voters in this district voted mainly for Democratic candidates in recent state and federal elections.
Scott was at a Harris-Walz election rally in Hampton, and thanked the crowd for the support of his campaign.
"Tonight, we celebrate a victory and renewed optimism for a brighter future for Hampton Roads and our nation," Scott said. “I continue to be appreciative of the voters’ trust in my ability to represent the 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. Congress. I am incredibly honored by the continued support.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my campaign staff, volunteers, supporters, and family for their many contributions and sacrifices. I would not be able to serve this community as effectively as I have without the backing of so many," he said.
