Many concerned about new Lime scooter safety in Norfolk

As scooter riders zip around the sidewalks and streets in Norfolk, not everyone is a fan of the new wheels hitting the pavement.

NORFOLK, Virginia — As scooter riders zip around the sidewalks and streets in Norfolk, not everyone is a fan of the new wheels hitting the pavement.

Ever since the City of Norfolk released 150 lime scooters Monday night as part of a pilot program, Scott Bailey said he noticed not all riders follow the rules of the road.

“I'm concerned about the safety of them zipping in and out of traffic,” said Bailey. “There's always the people that think they're on vacation it's a toy they can do whatever they want with it.”

Bailey’s concerns aren’t unwarranted. Consumer Reports found at least 1,500 e-scooter injuries since 2017, including 8 deaths.

Virginia Beach has also seen an uptick of accidents. Sentara Hospital officials said exact numbers are unavailable, but that they've had a handful of accidents since Bird scooters launched last year.

Norfolk Director of Transit Amy Inman said the City of Norfolk hasn't had any accidents but riders need to adhere to all traffic laws and safety precautions, especially at night.

“Make sure the lights in the reflector are working on the scooter before you take your trip and just be very mindful,” said Inman. “Make sure your presence is known. Don't wear dark colored clothing. Again, wear bright colored clothing and make sure you always wear your helmet.”

Norfolk Police said if anyone is caught riding a scooter while drunk, they will receive a DUI.

Norfolk City officials said they will continue to evaluate the program and adjust parameters as they see fit.
