Teen charged over social media threat against Tabb High School in York County

The 14-year-old girl is charged with threats of death or bodily injury to persons on school property.

YORKTOWN, Va. — A 14-year-old girl is in custody, accused of making threats against a York County high school.

The York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office said a school resource officer (SRO) at Tabb High School was alerted to a social media post made on Sunday by a student who threatened to "shoot up the school."

Noah Rivera is a freshman at Tabb High School. He said he never thought the first two weeks of school would start with a student threatening to harm others.

"I mean, it's scary to think about seeing how everything else that's going on," said Noah Rivera.

The SRO alerted school administrators, and the student was located and interviewed. The sheriff's office said that following the interview, the SRO charged the teen with threats of death or bodily injury to persons on school property, which is a felony.

“My mom was a little rattled whenever she first heard got the phone call, but I think she’s grateful that everybody was safe," said Rivera.

Following an investigation, York-Poquoson deputies determined the student did not have the means to carry out the threat.

Meanwhile, Rivera said he was happy the SRO had taken swift action to keep everyone safe.

"I feel like the school did a great job at handling it, acting fast. The resource officer did a great job, and they did a great job of not stressing out the students and making them all feel safe," said Rivera.

It is the second incident in the past week where a Hampton Roads student was charged with making a threat against a school. Last Monday, a 16-year-old girl was arrested for allegedly threatening to bomb Maury High School in Norfolk.
