CNU police chief identified as driver in deadly pedestrian crash in Williamsburg

Dan Woloszynowski remains employed by the university, a spokesperson confirmed.

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — The driver who struck and killed a pedestrian in Williamsburg on Friday has been identified as the police chief at Christopher Newport University (CNU), a spokesperson for the school confirmed.

Chief Dan Woloszynowski was off-duty and driving his own vehicle when the crash happened at around 7:45 p.m., officials said. He was heading west on Route 60, just east of the southern intersection with Route 199, when he struck a pedestrian, later identified as 48-year-old Shaine Henderson of Williamsburg.

Virginia State Police said Henderson was wearing all black clothing and was walking illegally in the roadway when he was hit.

Investigators were called to the scene and believe that neither alcohol nor speed were contributing factors in the crash.

Woloszynowski remains employed by the university, according to the school spokesperson Jim Hanchett, who said in a release he "continues to fulfill his duties leading the department."

"Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased and we are grateful for the rapid and professional response by the Virginia State Police, York County Sheriff’s Office, and other first responders," the release from CNU read.

Woloszynowski was not injured in the crash.

No charges have been filed, but the incident remains under investigation.
