VIRGINIA, USA — According to a new report from the Virginia Public Access Project (VPAP), voter registration is down across the Commonwealth.
The report looked at new voter registration data from the Virginia Board of Elections from January to August between 2008 and 2024.
After a surge in July, the study's authors said August remained "relatively flat" in comparison to previous years.
The study found that at least 188,000 Virginians have registered to vote so far this year, which is a significant decline from presidential election years dating back to 2008, when 225,000 new voters registered.
Virginia saw the highest voter registration during this timeframe in 2016, at 256,000.
For people ages 18-24, voter registrations dropped a little less than a thousand from 2020 to 2024 election year.
However, one political scientist said it could be due to many Virginians already being registered – about six million people.
