CODI Alert system now active in Virginia

The main difference between AMBER Alerts and CODI Alerts is that an abduction must be suspected before an AMBER Alert can be issued.

HAMPTON, Va. — A new alert for missing and endangered children went into effect in Virginia on Thursday.

The "Critical Operation for a Disappeared Child Initiative" or CODI Alert, is named for 4-year-old Codi Bigsby, who was never found after he was reported missing in Hampton in 2022. At the time, police had not issued an AMBER Alert because they did not believe the boy was abducted.

Now with the CODI Alert, Virginia State Police can put out a new alert for children under 18 or who are currently enrolled in a secondary school, who are missing under suspicious circumstances or if there is a threat to their health and safety.

In the case of Codi Bigsby, the boy was never found. His father, Cory Bigsby, was convicted of his murder earlier this year.
