HAMPTON, Va. — Hampton man Cory Bigsby will be 90 years old when he’s released from prison for murdering his son and concealing his body. But he could possibly be locked up for even longer.
Hampton Commonwealth’s Attorney Anton Bell said he’s now focused on “phase 2” of the case.
Bell said he plans to ask for a jury trial on the other 30 charges that Bigsby is facing, which include:
- 24 counts of child abuse and neglect showing reckless disregard for life (class 6 felony)
- 4 counts of child abuse and neglect resulting in serious injury (class 4 felony)
- 2 counts of failing to secure medical attention for an injured trial (misdemeanor)
If convicted, Bigsby would face up to 162 years in prison, Bell confirmed to 13News Now Tuesday afternoon.
That includes up to a year in prison for the misdemeanors, anywhere from two to 10 years for the class 4 felonies and anywhere from one to five years for the class 6 felonies.
Bell said he would ask the judge for the maximum sentence in this case, too.
"For those who have any questions whatsoever: Codi is dead. And we have to make sure the person who murdered him is held completely accountable for what he did. That's why we are going forth the way we are going forth,” Bell said after Tuesday’s sentencing.
A date has not yet been set for the second trial.
The 30 charges stem from when Bigsby was first arrested after Codi's disappearance before he was indicted for murder.
