NORFOLK, Va. — Several military families in Norfolk, are right on track with preparing their children for the back-to-school season.
The national nonprofit Operation Homefront's annual Back-to-School Brigade filled bookbags with school supplies and gave them to hundreds of children with parents in the military.
It's part of a nationwide initiative to make sure military kids have the resources they need to succeed in the classroom, while also giving their parents one less thing to worry about. For many military families, summer can be stressful, as they are often relocating to different duty stations.
Operation Homefront, the national nonprofit campaign has been distributing backpacks since 2008. It expects it will soon give away its 580,000th backpack which has saved families and estimated $60 million in back-to-school supplies.
