Elizabeth City deals with heavy rain after Debby

While Debby has long passed us, parts of our area are still feeling the lasting effects of the heavy rains.

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — Hampton Roads and northeast North Carolina had little time to dry out after Tropical Depression Debby before another round of heavy rain flooded both roads and water-logged yards on Saturday.

Heather Dieter was one of the many people who endured the weekend's downpours in Elizabeth City. Reports from radar indicate more than four inches of rain fell on the city on Saturday, creating dangerous driving conditions.

"I seen a big minivan that actually got stuck on that one street there, in the middle of the water. And I've never seen nothing like that, ever in my life," Dieter said.

Dieter herself even became a victim of the flooded roads after her car stalled out in floodwaters.

"I went over the Elizabeth City Bridge and it's like a big river out there. My car is totaled. It's done. I've never seen so much rain in my life," she said, adding, "There's no more Toyota Corolla for me!"

After more than 7.5 inches fell on the area over the last two days, Dieter and perhaps others in the area are hoping for drier days ahead.
