Repairs ongoing in Elizabeth City after equipment failure at power substation left about 1,000 customers in the dark

A spokesperson with Dominion Energy said the initial outage lasted about three hours and 45 minutes on Tuesday.

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — Dominion Energy crews are working to restore power in Elizabeth City following an equipment failure at a substation on Tuesday afternoon.

A spokesperson with Dominion said the crew was able to isolate the failed equipment.  Dominion provides the power to the municipal electric department that serves Elizabeth City.

The deputy director for Elizabeth City's electric department, Donnell White, told 13News Now that about 1,000 customers or more were affected by the outage, primarily in the area off of Hughes Boulevard.

In a post on social media shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday, Elizabeth City officials said the power was expected to be "restored within a couple of hours.

At about 7 p.m., Dominion spokesperson Cherise Newsome said power was restored, but a short time later, updated to say that "upon re-energizing the equipment at the substation, our crew noticed additional damage and had to proactively de-energize the equipment due to safety."

Newsome updated again after 9 p.m. to say that all power had been fully restored.
