NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A snake slithering into a power transformer led to thousands of customers being left in the dark on Saturday night, according to Dominion Energy.

It happened around 9 p.m. and resulted in about 11,700 customers losing power, mostly in the areas around Kiln Creek, central Newport News, and Christopher Newport University.

A spokesperson for Dominion Energy said a snake made contact with a transformer, which caused the outage. Dominion crews were able to restore service to all customers by about 10:30.
