VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A popular Florida-based grocery store chain is set to cut the ribbon on a new supermarket in Hampton Roads.
A new Publix Super Market will hold its grand opening on Thursday, Dec. 12, at 7 a.m. Its arrival comes a year after the first Publix in the seven cities came to Suffolk. There are also Publix locations in Williamsburg and Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, and the grocery store chain is preparing to open stores in Chesapeake and Carrollton sometime soon.
Publix at Hickman Place is located at 2200 General Booth Boulevard in Virginia Beach. A Publix spokesperson said the new store is over 49,000 square feet in size and will employ approximately 140 workers.
The first Publix opened in 1930 in Florida and the company has grown to more than 1,000 stores across the Southeast. It boasts a full-service deli, bakery, and a drive-thru pharmacy, in addition to groceries and fresh produce. It often ranks near the top of the most popular grocery stores in the United States.
