SUFFOLK, Va. — The wait is over for a popular Florida-based grocery store chain's arrival in Southside Hampton Roads.
A new Publix Super Market held its grand opening in Suffolk on Wednesday, Dec. 13, at 7 a.m. The event drew customers from around the city, packing the parking lot within just hours of opening.
Publix at Planters Station is located at 3189 Godwin Boulevard, by Kings Fork Road. A Publix spokesperson said the new store is 46,791 square feet in size and will employ approximately 130 workers.
It is the third Publix to open in the region, following Publix grocery stores in Williamsburg and Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, both of which opened in 2018. Even more Publix Super Markets are on the way, with the company announcing new locations in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and Carrollton planned for 2024.
The first Publix opened in 1930 in Florida and the company has grown to more than 1,000 stores across the Southeast. It boasts a full-service deli, bakery, and a drive-thru pharmacy, in addition to groceries and fresh produce. It often ranks near the top of the most popular grocery stores in the United States.
