Kids Cove playground at Mount Trashmore to undergo $1.6M renovation

The City of Virginia Beach said the Kids Cove Playground will undergo a $1.6 million renovation, beginning in January.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The playground area at Virginia Beach's Mount Trashmore Park is about to get a major upgrade.

The City of Virginia Beach said the Kids Cove Playground will undergo a $1.6 million renovation, beginning in January. It will include a 3,200-square-foot extension of park amenities and include new playground equipment, such as hillside slides, climbers, and nets with safety surfacing.

The city said the new play area will be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

"These new updates will enhance the overall play experience for children and provide a fun way for children to climb and slide down the hillside," said Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation Director Michael Kirschman in a news release.

In addition to the upgrades at Kids Cove, officials said the timber stairs that go up Mount Trashmore will be removed and replaced with a new set of concrete stairs and relocated closer to the playground area. This will also mean the removal of the "Helping Hands" mural art on the existing staircase, painted in 2018 by artist Aimee Bruce.

The timber stairs near the special events building/Water Wise Garden will also be removed and replaced at the same location with concrete.

Construction for the project is expected to be completed by late summer of 2024.
