VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) --- Most people visit Mount Trashmore for the exercise, the family time or maybe even the view, but now there is one more reason to visit the local landmark.
Guests can now appreciate good art at Mount Trashmore because of Aimee Bruce.
On the park’s east-facing staircase is the painting of a hand reaching out for another hand. It’s Bruce’s modern take on Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam.
“Just to help represent what Mount Trashmore is all about,” said Bruce. “Coming together as a community, being outside.”
The Tallwood High School and Old Dominion University graduate has been a creator all of her life, and she won a big opportunity to put her passion to the pavement.
Her mural concept, entitled Helping Hands, was voted on and selected out of a long list of applicants hoping to take on a city-commissioned art project.
Bruce wore knee pads up and down the stairs and worked long hours for a week to bring her idea to life.
“The more you wear yourself out, the more you can appreciate what you work hard for,” said Bruce.
Every brush stroke built on her message - a different, new way of looking at an old local landmark.
“More than ever we need to come together and create something stronger,” she said. “Almost like a better bond.”
