Virginia Beach boy wakes from coma a week after injury from stray bullet

Landyn Davis was shot in the 3200 block of Peele Court last Tuesday when a stray bullet came through his home and hit him in the back of the head.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The 8-year-old who was critically injured by a stray bullet in Virginia Beach is awake following a medically induced coma, according to a Facebook post from the child's mother.

"My baby has woke up, moved his head, legs, and lifted my hand," Emily Rigsby wrote on Facebook about her son, Landyn Davis. "GOD IS GOOD!!!!"

In a text message to 13News Now, Rigsby said, "He isn’t awake per se, he opens his eyes for periods of time. He is still on anesthetics."

Landyn was shot in the 3200 block of Peele Court last Tuesday when a stray bullet came through his home and hit him in the back of the head while he was playing video games.

First responders rushed Landyn to the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters in Norfolk, where he was put into a coma. On Monday, the boy opened his eyes, and according to a family friend, a CT scan showed his brain was stable.

Since the shooting, the community has rallied around the family using #LandynStrong to show support in his recovery.

Police are still seeking information in connection to the shooting. Anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or thinks they have information that could help investigators can reach out to Virginia Beach detectives by calling 757-385-4101.

Last week, the Virginia Beach Crime Solvers voted to raise the reward to up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest in this case, higher than the usual reward of $1,500.
