Anchors aweigh! Sailors spruce up local elementary school for a first day to remember

Sailors turned into school decorators, bulletin board experts, and garden gurus to get Camp Allen shipshape for the first day of school.

NORFOLK, Va. — Sailors from Navy Region Mid-Atlantic volunteered to help prepare Camp Allen Elementary School for the first day of school on Thursday in honor of Servicing Our Schools Day.

Sailors decorated classrooms, prepared the bulletin board display, helped with outdoor beautification, and many other needs in preparation for the first day of school on August 19.

This is the third year the Navy has partnered with Norfolk Public Schools (NPS) for this volunteer program. This is the first year Camp Allen Elementary School has participated.

Other NPS schools that will receive volunteer help from sailors include:

  • Sewells Point Elementary School
  • Suburban Park Elementary School
  • Camp E. W. Young
  • Richard Bowling Elementary School
  • Mary Calcott Elementary School
  • Chesterfield Academy
  • The Academy for Discovery at Lakewood
  • Little Creek Elementary School
  • W. H. Taylor Elementary School
  • Azalea Gardens Middle School
  • Ruffner Middle School
  • Lake Taylor School, Madison Alternative School
  • Norview High School

With the Navy's help and a little maritime magic, Camp Allen and other Norfolk schools are set to launch into the new school year with full sails and shipshape campuses. The partnership between Navy Region Mid-Atlantic and Norfolk Public Schools continues to strengthen community ties, proving that when it comes to supporting our schools, these sailors are all hands on deck.
