NORFOLK, Va. — On Tuesday the Foodbank of Southern Virginia and the Eastern Shore and Sentara cut the ribbon on the Community Feed at Berkley, a food hub adjacent to the Sentara Community Care Center at 701 South Main Street in Norfolk's Berkley neighborhood.
The Community Feed at Berkley is a small retail site where patients can leave the Sentara Community Care Center and walk next door to receive healthy food for their families at no cost. The partnership extends both organizations' missions to help people lead healthier lives by offering a medical home for low-income patients and healthy food.
On Tuesday morning, leaders from the Foodbank and Sentara Community Care at the event held interviews.
"The Berkley community has been a food desert and having access to healthy and nutritious food has been an issue for this community," said Chris Tan, the president and CEO of Foodbank of Southern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. "This is an opportunity for the Foodbank to create a community within Berkley. They can get the food for free and maintain healthy lifestyles."
