Norfolk police arrest suspect in deadly 'domestic-related' double stabbing

Ronnie N. Campbell, 21, faces murder charges. He is accused of stabbing his father and grandmother to death.

NORFOLK, Va. — A Norfolk man is suspected of killing his father and grandmother. 21-year-old Ronnie N. Campbell stabbed both victims to death, police said.

It happened on Dunkirk Avenue in the Lafayette area of the city on Thursday evening, just as many neighbors were coming home from work.

Ronnie N. Campbell faces two second-degree murder charges and one count of malicious wounding.

64-year-old Arneta Thagard and 46-year-old Ronnie C. Campbell died from stab wounds, according to Norfolk police.

"This is really uneasy, but they say they found the person who did everything. I hope everything gets taken care of. I hope this family finds closure at the end of all of this, because this is a sad occasion, very sad," said a neighbor, who preferred not want to provide her name.

Norfolk police said Ronnie N. Campbell is the grandson and son of the victims.

"It's just sad, it's heartbreaking," said Dominic Dixon. He didn't hear anything, but only noticed something was up when he saw flashing lights through the windows of his home.

When responding officers arrived at Dunkirk Avenue just before 5 p.m. on Thursday, they said they found Thagard badly hurt. She died at the scene.

Medics took Ronnie C. Campbell to the hospital, where he later died.

Some neighbors off-camera told 13News Now they heard some commotion outside and saw blood on the ground.

Detectives said they arrested Ronnie N. Campbell less than half a mile away on Alsace Avenue at around 9:45 Thursday night.

"Why? It's just senseless. It's very senseless," said one neighbor, reflecting on the violence.

Many neighbors are thinking of the family.

"That they gain some peace through all of it. It's real sad, again, but hopefully they will find peace in the situation. Hopefully, the neighborhood can come back together," Dixon added.

Detectives have not released a motive or any details about what led up to the stabbing.

Another relative previously filed a protective order against the stabbing suspect out of fear for their safety, according to Norfolk court records.

Ronnie N. Campbell declined an interview request from jail.
