NORFOLK, Va. — All charges against one of the three suspects in the 2023 murder of Norfolk State University (NSU) student Jahari George were withdrawn in court Wednesday.
Marquas Gregg was originally charged with second-degree murder, conspiracy, and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. According to online court records, his charges were nolle prossed, meaning while they were withdrawn, they could be brought back at a later time.
In a statement to 13News Now, Norfolk Commonwealth's Attorney Ramin Fatehi said there is currently not enough evidence to prove beyond doubt that Gregg committed the crimes he was initially accused of.
"While Mr. Gregg was present at the scene, presence at a scene by itself is not sufficient to prove the intent to commit a crime. Ethically, we had no choice but to withdraw the charges," Fatehi said, in part.
He added: "The evidence against the other two codefendants is quite different, and we have every intention of proceeding against them, beginning with their preliminary hearings on May 13."
The two other suspects, Camari Warren and Cameron Brown, are also charged with second-degree murder, conspiracy, and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The shooting happened in early September 2023 on Gate House Road near Colchester Crescent, which is just down the street from NSU’s campus. George was a 20-year-old engineering student in his junior year.
Gregg was later arrested in Richmond, while Warren and Brown were both taken into custody in Portsmouth.
