NORFOLK, Va. — Working smoke detectors alerted a Norfolk resident to a fire that had started in their home on Wednesday morning, Norfolk Fire-Rescue said.
Crews were called to the 7500 block of Yorktown Drive shortly before 10:30 a.m. They arrived to find smoke coming from the front of a house and fire in the home's stairwell and second floor.
Firefighters were able to attack and extinguish the fire, bringing it under control in about 20 minutes. Extra crews were called out due to the day's extreme heat.

The fire marshal's office is investigating, but determined the fire started in or around a window air conditioning unit.
No one was hurt, and the fire department said the homeowner will not need help from the Red Cross.
