Crews respond to house fire in Ocean View area of Norfolk

The fire happened in the 1600 block of East Ocean View Avenue. Aside from a pig, no one was inside the building when the fire broke out.

NORFOLK, Va. — Crews battled a house fire in the Ocean View area of Norfolk on Thursday morning.

The fire happened in the 1600 block of East Ocean View Avenue, with firefighters arriving to find the home in heavy smoke and flames shortly before 10 a.m. The heat from the fire was so intense, it had begun to melt the siding of a neighboring structure.

"We did upgrade this to a second alarm due to the high heat for the firefighters," said Norfolk Batallion Chief Glen Williams. "The extreme heat is definitely adding dangerous conditions to our crews."

Before crews arrived, neighbor told 13News Now two good Samaritans jumped out of their car and ran towards the home, yelling for people to get out of the house.

"Two military guys drove by and stopped and got out of their cars and ran in, I don't know if they were checking to see if anyone was inside the house or not but they ran in the house," said one neighbor.

Williams said those two men discovered that a pig was  still inside the house. Firefighters then took over and rescued the pig alongside animal control.

13News Now is told the pig is okay, and that no one else was inside the house.

One person is reportedly displaced by the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
