Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden makes campaign stop in Norfolk

The former vice president made his pitch for president to a crowd at Booker T. Washington High School ahead of Super Tuesday.

NORFOLK, Va. — Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden made a campaign stop in Norfolk on Sunday ahead of the presidential primary on Tuesday.

The visit came a day after the former vice president won the South Carolina Democratic primary.

A poll released by the Wason Center for Public Policy at Christopher Newport University showed 22 percent of likely voters in the Virginia primary would throw their support behind Biden. Bernie Sanders was preferred by 17 percent of voters who took part in the survey, while 13 percent stood behind Mike Bloomberg.

Senator Tim Kaine endorsed Biden on Friday and made reference to Biden's work with former President Barack Obama on health care expansion, climate change, and his appointments of judicial and executive positions during his time in office.

Kaine appeared with Biden during Biden's campaign stop at Booker T. Washington High School as did former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe who also said he was backing the former vice president.

Biden said he wanted people to know he supports a minimum wage hike.

“The idea that you can work 40 hours and still be in poverty is outrageous. I support a national minimum wage of 15 dollars," said Biden.

Biden said he also wants everyone to have a public health care option.

“A Medicare-like option that if you were unable to have access to Medicaid, which some states did not take advantage of under our proposal of Obamacare, you would automatically be enrolled in the Medicare program," said Biden.

Biden said he would also focus on veterans and military members.

“We need to prepare those we send into harms way, care for their families while they’re gone and make sure we care for them while they’re home,” said Biden.
