NORFOLK, Va. — One man is dead and two others are injured after a shooting on Thursday, the Norfolk Police Department (NPD) said. It marks the second broad daylight shooting in the Calvert Square neighborhood in as many days.
Just over 24 hours before, a bullet hit a woman about 600 feet away in the 800 block of E. Olney Road. She was an innocent bystander to an alleged argument that happened between two men. Police say she has minor injuries, but they're still looking for suspects.
Norfolk Police Chief Mark Talbot spoke about the neighborhood's violence rate Thursday, saying, "This is one of the neighborhoods where we’re struggling with many of the residents who live here to make it safer. This is another tragic incident we’re hoping to continue to reduce."
Police were patrolling the area following Wednesday's shooting around 4:45 p.m. Thursday when they were alerted to more gunfire in the neighborhood. Talbot said, "Officers were about a block away; they heard somewhere around 10 shots."
Police said officers arrived at the 900 block of Bagnall Road to find a 23-year-old man suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital to be treated and has since been released.
Moments after finding the first gunshot victim, police said they found two more men who had been shot in the 700 block of Chapel Street. One of the men, 19-year-old Javid K. Williams of Norfolk, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other victim, a 29-year-old man, remains in the hospital with a life-threatening gunshot wound.
"We’ll be out here for an extended period of time, both proactively patrolling and furthering this investigation," explained Chief Talbot. "We have a lot of people out here to talk to. We have forensic work to do out here on scene."
No suspects have been named, but police believe there are people who have information that could lead to arrests.
"We are certain there are people out here who know what happened, and we are hoping they'll reach out to us," Chief Talbot said.
This is an ongoing investigation. More details will be provided when available. If you know anything that can help police, you're asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-562-5887 or submit an online tip at P3Tips.
