NORFOLK, Va. — A woman was hurt in a shooting on East Olney Road in Norfolk Wednesday afternoon, police said.
A spokesperson for the Norfolk Police Department said the victim was an innocent bystander to an argument that happened between two men. It happened on East Olney Road near the shopping center on Church Street shortly after 4 p.m.
"An innocent bystander who happened to be in the vicinity was struck by gunfire," said Karen Parker-Chesson, Norfolk Police's community relations manager. "Right now that person has non-life-threatening injuries."
NPD said the woman was taken to a hospital for further treatment.
Parker-Chesson said the two men are considered suspects and aren't in custody at this time. "We are relying on the community to help us with information," she said. "This is an incident that happened in broad daylight."
James Washington is a community outreach volunteer who was in the neighborhood at the time of the shooting. He told 13News Now, "we’re sitting around talking, then all of the sudden, 'pop, pop, pop, rapid gunfire." Washington believes he heard between 10 and 15 shots. "At first we thought it was firecrackers," he explained. "I said, ‘Firecrackers, firecrackers just don’t sound like that.'"
Police urge people who may have information about the shooting to call the crime line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP. Washington said events like this should be unacceptable in the community.
He explained, "It’s an outrage. You should be outraged about what’s going on in our communities."
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
