NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Problems are piling up at Aqua Vista apartments.
Newport News Codes Compliance staff said management at did not address all the violations by last Monday’s deadline. Now they’re facing potential legal action.
Newport News Codes Compliance said as of last week, two-thirds of the work remained incomplete.
Staff inspected all 150 units at Aqua Vista at the end of January. They found a total of 312 violations in 145 units. Management had until March 2 to fix all of the issues.
Codes Compliance staff met with representatives from the complex and their attorney last week and agreed to give Aqua Vista a two-week extension. If the work is not completed by then, the matter may go to court.
Codes Compliance staff is giving Newport News city council an update on the re-inspections during a city council work session Tuesday. Codes Compliance said none of the issues are considered life safety issues. They are routine property maintenance violations, from exposed wires to leaking toilets and holes in the wall.
Laotia Johnson said nothing is getting done.
“It's frustrating and tenants can't leave because this is what they can afford,” Johnson said. “It's hard for tenants to grasp with the fact that these people who are to provide are not.”
