NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — After a Nov. 1 shooting on Marshall Avenue in Newport News that lead to a man's death, police have charged a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old with his murder.
On that night, just before 10:30 p.m., officers were called to the 3700 block of Marshall Avenue after being notified by their gunshot detection system. When they got there, they discovered 24-year-old Mahleik Barber suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he later died.
After investigating the incident, Newport News police on Tuesday charged a 17-year-old boy, in custody for an unrelated charge, with second-degree murder, malicious wounding, and several firearm offenses in relation to Barber's death. They did not release the teen's name.
On Wednesday, they arrested 18-year-old Deandre Hunter of Newport News on the same charges.
